Tiverton Four Corners Arts Center is hosting “Creating A New Story: An Evening of Poetry, Performance & Art” at the Meeting House on September 30th 7:30- 9:00 PM. The event will offer a community conversation to close the evening.
For so many of us the realization grows that the stories that inform our culture and shape our society no longer work. More and more, we experience a deepening sense that unprecedented change is unfolding in our world. Our time is a time of intensifying challenges — even threats — and we sense that the old stories that have led us to this point are failing us.
We might say, as Yeats did, that “the centre cannot hold.” We sometimes feel confined to simply “rage, rage against the dying of the light” as Dylan Thomas put it. And we sense, somehow, that as Auden wrote, “we must love one other or die.”
If the old story is one of separation manifested in a culture steeped in competition and exploitation, voices are emerging to suggest that the new story will be one of interbeing, as Thich Nhat Hanh and others put it.
What might the new stories sound like? What visions will our pictures show? As we enter an era of intensifying disorder, it is time to re-envision the future, to create together the new stories that can give life to the structures that might appear after the old ones crumble. The endings that we sense are opening space for change. And for hope.
The Four Corners event will include curated presentations by local poets, artists and students and an open conversation with the community that could lead to…. something new.
