Kate Grana is a versatile singer and performer having trained and performed in operatic works in Europe as well as the U.S. She taught music in the Portsmouth School Department becoming director of Choral Activities before retiring in 2002. Reinventing herself and broadening her vocal talents she created a Voice-Over business and rediscovered her love of guitar/song performance. Kate has appeared at the Custom Coffee House in Portsmouth, Cupper’s in Somerset and The Coffee Depot in Warren, Long Wharf in Newport, The Grill at Wind Mill Hill and was thrilled to be the host for the “Gathering of Fiddlers and Fisherman” at the Common Fence Point Association this past season. Kate is clearly a voice talent of many facets.

When: May 30th 2012 @ 7:30pm

Where: the Meeting House

Presented in a manner as eerie as it is heartbreaking, this film is a gorgeous supernatural fable about the folly of men with dreams larger than their abilities and their women who suffer as a result. Genjuro is a potter who longs for wealth and luxury, while Tobei, a farmer, dreams of the glories of the samurai to the point of ignoring his wife. Though a war rages around them, they venture to town to sell their wares. Genjuro becomes bewitched by a beautiful though vengeful ghost, while his wife is murdered by a soldier.

Collective Voice/Collective Vision:

a two-day intensive in storytelling languages and the chorus

May 12th-13th 2012

Tiverton Four Corners, RI

The Four Corners Arts Center is hosting a two-day workshop for performers, theatre-makers, storytellers and artists. Discover the power of the theatrical masses while collaboratively creating dramatic action through movement exercises, theatre games and improvisation. Local physical theatre company Strange Attractor will ask you to recreate a Hollywood blockbuster, become an expressionist painting, be part of a voice with seven bodies, and harness the energy stirred up when a group of people play in space together.

Whether you are an actor, a storyteller, a dancer, or a writer interested in pushing your creative frontier, this workshop will challenge you to find richer dynamics, increased sensitivity, a greater state of play, and deeper expression in your work.

The workshop runs from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday, May 12 and Sunday, May 13 at The Four Corners Arts Center. This workshop is free of charge, thanks to support from the Rhode Island State Council on the Arts and The Four Corner Arts Center*. Advance Registration is required. 15-person limit. 21+ age requirement. No previous performance experience necessary. Participation at both days is required to attend. Email Rebecca at rebelnoon@gmail.com for registration/information

Aram Aghazarian, Jed Hancock-Brainerd and Rebecca Noon met while studying at the London International School of Performing Art (LISPA). In 2010 they co-founded Strange Attractor Theatre Co and have since created four shows: F.orward O.perating B.ase (Perseverance Theatre, Juneau, Alaska), Special Happy (Perishable Theatre), If You Shoot a Boot You Might Get Wet (Perishable Theatre with Rompecabezas Teatro), and A Terrific Fire (developed with Perseverance Theatre in Juneau and Perishable Theatre and 95 Empire/AS220 in Providence).

*This activity is made possible in part by a grant from the Rhode Island State Council on the Arts, through an appropriation by the Rhode Island General Assembly and a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts.

The Cultural Survival Bazaars are a series of cultural festivals that give Indigenous artists, their representatives, and fair trade companies from around the world the chance to sell their work directly to the American public. They also expose over 35,000 Americans each year to Indigenous art, music, and culture, while giving visitors a chance to talk with Indigenous artists directly.

In the past seven years alone the bazaars have generated over $3 million for indigenous artisans, fair trade businesses, indigenous communities’ programs, and Cultural Survival’s work on behalf of indigenous peoples..

Every year, hundreds of artists and their representatives sell traditional crafts, artwork, clothing, jewelry, carpets, and accessories.

The bazaars also offer a wide assortment of cultural performances, which include live music from around the world, Native American storytelling, cultural presentations, craft-making demonstrations, short films, and much more.

The Four Corners Arts Center is pleased to present the 2009 documentary film, Vanishing Bees on Wednesday May 18th 2011 at 7:30 p.m. at the Meeting House in Tiverton Four Corners.

Known as Colony Collapse Disorder, the phenomenon has brought beekeepers to crisis in an industry responsible for producing apples, broccoli, watermelon, onions, cherries and a hundred other fruits and vegetables. Commercial honeybee operations pollinate crops that make up one out of every three bites of food on our tables.

Vanishing of the Bees follows commercial beekeepers David Hackenberg and Dave Mendes as they strive to keep their bees healthy and fulfill pollination contracts across the U.S. The Film explores the struggles they face as the two friends plead their case on Capitol Hill and travel across the Pacific Ocean in the quest to protect their honeybees.

Filming across the US, in Europe, Australia and Asia, this documentary examines the alarming disappearance of honeybees and the greater meaning it holds about the relationship between mankind and mother earth.

This event is FREE & OPEN to the PUBLIC thanks to the generous support and sponsorship by Coastal Roasters!

Hong King, 1962: Chow Mo-wan and Su Li-Zhen move into neighboring apartments on the same day. Their encounters are polite and formal-until a discovery about their respective spouses sparks an intimate bond. At once delicately mannered and visually stunning, Wong Kar-wai’s In the Mood for Love is a masterful evocation of romantic longing and fleeting moments in time.

This Oscar-winning film from 1987 was written and directed by Gabriel Axel. It is the story of Babette, a refugee from the civil war in Paris, who arrives at the home of pious sisters Martina and Philippa in an isolated village in Denmark. Babette works as their housekeeper for years until one day when she wins the lottery and decides as a farewell to the sisters she will prepare an outrageous and gourmet French meal. The lavish feast tests the moral fiber of the puritanical townsfolk, who vow to withstand the sensual pleasure of the meal.

Photography and presentation by Geoff Dennis
WHEN: April 25, 2010
WHERE: The Meeting House, Tiverton Four Corners

Geoff Dennis has made it his personal goal to understand, protect and photograph the birds of the Sakonnet region. He has observed over 180 species of birds, including reporting the first sighting in R.I. of the Rufous Hummingbird, along with discovering and photographing New England’s first recorded sighting of the Virginia’s Warbler in Maine.Join us Sunday afternoon, April 25th, as Goeff talks about his many bird encounters, shows us the resulting bird photographs and shares his extraordinary knowledge of Sakonnet area birds.

Sponsored by the Tiverton Open Space Commission and the Tiverton Land Trust. These organizations work together to preserve high quality bird habitats in Tiverton such as Weetamoo Woods and Pardon Gray Preserve. These protected areas contain a mix of woodland, edge, and grassland habitats that sustain a wide variety of bird species. The talk is free and open to the public.

The photography of Geoff Dennis is used by the R.I. Chapter of the Nature Conservancy, Audubon Society of R.I., U.S. Fish and Wildlife, and Cornell University’s Birds of North America Online to support preservation of the natural world, and in particular, our Sakonnet region. He currently photographs for three major bird feeder companies.

Geoff Dennis is a commercial fisherman and lives in Little Compton with his wife, Emily.

WHEN: April 17, 2010
WHERE: The Meeting House
Free and Open to the Public

The Four Corners Arts Center is pleased to present an evening about Greenland Kayaking together with a special showing of “The Wedding of Palo”, a documentary film made in 1933 about an Inuit community in Greenland. The event is sponsored by Westport’s Osprey Sea Kayak Adventures. There will also be a presentation of traditional Greenland kayaking by Cheri Perry and Turner Wilson.

“The Wedding of Palo” was filmed in 1933 by Knud Rassmussen, a Danish explorer and ethnographer. Unlike a conventional documentary describing the lives of Inuit before the arrival of Christianity in Greenland, Rassmussen creates a story line - a love triangle with an unmarried Inuit woman and two hunter/suitors – and uses the villagers as his “actors”. This film is currently in the collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Rassmussen died from food poisoning shortly before completing the film, which was finished in Denmark by his film crew.

Cheri Perry and Turner Wilson are partners in a company, Kayak Ways, that is based on the notion that traditional kayaking skills and tools of the Inuit seal catchers offer valuable lessons for modern day recreational kayakers. Both Cheri and Turner have won gold medals in the Greenland National Kayaking Championships and have demonstrated Greenlandic kayaking techniques throughout the USA and in Europe. Turner now builds custom Greenland-style skin on frame qajaq, paatit (Greenland paddles), and norsq (rolling sticks) as well as teaching workshops for individuals and groups.
