PAINTING IN THE STUDIO WITH ACRYLICS:

Explore painterly techniques and expressive qualities of painting with acrylics. Demonstrations given on stretching canvas, organizing a pallet, mixing colors, glazing, applying brushstrokes and using a pallet knife. Students will paint directly from life. Class attention given to composition, value, volume, color theory and painterly processes. Historical Examples of paintings shown and critical language will be developed. Students will provide their own materials- Materials list will be provided.
PASTEL: OBSERVING NATURE: all levels welcome (Age 13 and up)

Explore the medium and techniques of pastels and oil pastels. The inspiration will come from observing nature including: fruit, vegetables, seashore shells and crustaceans, birds, the skeleton, and a field trip to the botanical garden, beach or the zoo. Demonstrations given on color theory and the techniques of pastels and oil pastels. Concentration will be on botanical and academic drawing. Botanical art examples shown and discussed in the classroom. Students will provide their own materials- Materials list will be provided.
PLEIN-AIR WORK SHOP: all levels welcome (Age 13 and up)

Students will learn to paint in the “Open Air” capturing the light, atmosphere and the natural subject matter. The class will travel and paint in the sculpture garden at the 4 Corners Art Center, at Fogland Beach, and the Botanical Gardens and Zoo at Roger Williams Park in Providence Rhode Island. Students may work in oil, acrylics or pastels. Artworks will be completed on site in one sitting and without an under painting. The artworks will be less detailed and more Impressionistic. We will view examples of art works from Barbizon school, Impressionism through modern Plein-air Painters. Concentration will be on the artist’s personal style. Students will provide their own materials- Materials list will be provided.

Do you have a favorite portrait that would make an amazing drawing?
This class will teach you how to take that photograph and enlarge it into a
custom hand drawn masterpiece. Using graphite or charcoal you will learn
techniques like smudging, layering, proportioning, blending, contouring,
composition, how to create texture and depth. You will be creating one
complete picture by the end of this course, and gaining the knowledge to
create as many as you want in the future! Keeping the class size small
everyone will have a lot of one on one time, so join now while there is
still room!
6 week session. Thursdays 6:00 pm -8:00 pm September 11, 18, October 2, 9, 16, 23....Please note that there will be no class on Thursday, September 25th.
